Leaked HTC TouchFLO interface for Windows Mobile hits the web

February 1st, 2008

There’s an unofficial application floating around that may be a beta version of an update to HTC’s TouchFLO interface for Windows Mobile. TouchFLO is basically a skin that replaces the default Windows mobile user interface with one that packs nice big icons that are easy to use with a finger rather than a stylus.

Some folks at the XDA-Developers forum have managed to get the application, which bears the codename Manila, up and running. And while it’s certainly pretty to look at, it’s reportedly quite sluggish. In fact, once you have it up and running, you’ll be lucky if you can get your PDA or phone to do much of anything. So we certainly wouldn’t recommend installing Manila, at least not until someone leaks a faster version.

Gmail IMAP Settings For Windows Mobile

January 29th, 2008

I currently carry two phones around with me during the day, my personal Nokia N95 and my HTC S620 for work.  The S620 is a great phone for email, but unfortunately the Windows Mobile version of the gmail mobile app looks awful on it, and gmail IMAP had problems dealing with HTML email.

Luckily, the gmail IMAP problems with Windows Mobile have just been fixed  and I now have good access to my gmail account on my Windows Mobile device. To get the gmail IMAP settings for your Windows Mobile device click here.

Using both a Symbian handset (Nokia N95) and a Windows Mobile device on a daily basis has been a real eye-opener for me.  The Nokia N95 is fantastic for the weekends and evenings where the multimedia and better phone qualities come into play, but I just can’t fault the email access and particularly the Microsoft Exchange support, and now gmail IMAP, of the HTC s620 Windows Mobile 6 device.

I think when my Nokia N95 comes up for replacement in the autumn I’m going to have to get a Windows Mobile device, as the email support wins the day for me.  Or, is there a Symbian device that offers better Exchange support e.g. syncing individual folders, sent folder etc?

Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade Finally Available for Samsung BlackJack

January 28th, 2008

AT&T and Samsung have released an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for their popular BlackJack, also known as the SGH-i607, smartphone. This platform update was promised ages ago. With the release of the BlackJack II not too long ago—itself already running on Microsoft latest mobile platform—it seemed like Windows Mobile 6 would never arrive for the original BlackJack model. With this upgrade installed, the BlackJack will become a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device like the BlackJack II. Of course, it won’t give the former the greater amount of storage, higher-quality camera (up to 2 megapixels from 1.3 megapixels), integrated GPS, and support for 3G cellular-wireless data networking outside the U.S. that the latter brings to the table.

In addition to a sleeker user interface and smoother running mobile platform, Windows Mobile 6 will update Microsoft’s Office Mobile application to allow BlackJack users to not only view, as they already could, but edit Word and Excel documents for the first time. You can still only view PowerPoint presentations.

The upgrade allows the BlackJack to support HTML-formatted e-mail as well. That means folks can view and compose e-mail messages in their original HTML format with live links to Web sites, support for images, tables and bullets.

You can download the BlackJack’s Windows Mobile 6 upgrade here, directly from the Samsung Web site, where you’ll also find detailed instructions to walk you through the installation process.

In addition to Windows Mobile 6, Samsung says the update includes numerous enhancements/corrections for the BlackJack. It should take about 10 minutes to complete the installation process, which Samsung walks you though with detailed instructions.

Microsoft Windows Mobile refuses to die

January 24th, 2008

Microsoft Group Product Manager for Windows Mobile Scott Rockfeld says, “”We are definitely moving into making Windows Mobile come alive for the consumer.” This says to me -and anyone else using Windows Mobile- “it has been a dead product for years and we’ve been faking the updates.” So, Microsoft is filling an open position for its VP of Marketing for mobile communications and will pump Zumobi, which sounds like a character from Star Wars Episode 2, but is in fact a bit of software that aims to make WM better for web browsing.

According to PC World, analysts believe Microsoft will focus its development on the cash-rich nice of enterprise applications.  Which, beyond support for MS Exchange is completely lost on me as Word and Excel readers/editors are lame at best (on Windows Mobile) thanks in part to the small screen these devices have and in part to the software that refuses to acknowledge the small space needs.

The rumor mill points to an ‘09 release of WM7.  Adding more marketing power isn’t going to help, that’s my take.  What is yours?  Is Windows Mobile nearing the end of the rope?

Microsoft to start charging for Windows Live Mobile Messenger?

January 10th, 2008

File this under evil chain mail letters come true friends, but if you believe the rising buzz we’re seeing at MoDaCo — and we totally do — Microsoft may well be set to start charging for Windows Live Mobile Messenger. Apparently users are seeing a message about a 30 day trial with an option to purchase a 30-day pass at the conclusion of the trial.

While we understand that this service must cost Microsoft something, we don’t think Microsoft understands just how upset this is going to make users of its platform — even if it is covered under the service’s terms and conditions. We’re so stoked to watch the fallout, oh, and if you have a Windows Mobile device and want to try setting the date forward on your device, let us know what happens.
