MPlayer being ported to Windows Mobile

November 27th, 2007

The first version of MPlayer for Windows Mobile is a bit rough around the edges. The GUI is pretty basic, and the CPU usage is pretty high. But the fact that MPlayer supports practically every audio and video format known to mankind kind of makes up for that.

This is the only Windows Mobile media player, for example that supports RealAudio and RealVideo files, unless you count Real Media’s outdated RealPlayer for Windows Mobile. The WMA decoder isn’t working, but there’s support for H.264, Flac, MP4, M4a, OGG, MP3, and a slew of other formats.

Windows Vista SideShow coming to Windows Mobile?

November 26th, 2007

Microsoft has just published an SDK for SideShow with support for Bluetooth and QVGA screens: two features that many Windows Mobile devices already have. The folks at the::unwired speculate this could mean a Windows Mobile SideShow application is on its way. In other words, you’d be able to fire up a program on your phone or PDA that will give you control over your desktop. Your PDA could become your favorite remote control, web browser, or email tool.

Earlier this year Microsoft announced that a Windows Mobile Sideshow program was on its way, but we’ve been waiting about half a year to see anything materialize. Hopefully the SDK launch means we won’t have to wait much longer. Read more …

    Sprint To Launch Moto Q9c

    November 23rd, 2007

Sprint has begun advertising the Motorola Q9c in its holiday promotions. The handset appears to be the same as the Q9m for Verizon, but with chrome accents. The device is advertised with Windows Mobile 6 and Bluetooth. The CDMA Q9 also features a miniSD slot and 1.3 Megapixel camera. Sprint will sell the Q9c for $150 after rebate and 2 year contract. Sprint’s holiday promotional web site originally called the device the “Q2″, and showed it running Palm OS 5, which created some confusion.
